Among ethnic groups in Taiwan, around fifteen percent of the islanders here areHakka people, the second largest ethnic group. Inheriting Hakka spirit and culture,Hakka traditional sports need to be preserved. The purpose of this study is to explore thedevelopment of Artillery Activity Festival, one of the Hakka traditional sports inLiu-Tui area. Adopting historical method and literature analysis, this study mainlydiscussed Artillery Activity Festival including its development and variety. Theconclusions of this study are as follows: Artillery Activity is called Pole-FirecrackerBeating in southern Liu-Tui area. In the past, Artillery Activity was used to gatherresidents to defend and fight against enemies; in addition, the residents acquireddefensive skills and physical training through the Artillery Activity. Although thecontemporary Artillery Activity does not focus on defensive skills anymore, it has greatvalue for folk sports used to strengthen our bodies. Nowadays, the Artillery Activity hasbecome one of the twelve great Hakka festivals and this activity helps preserve and passdown Liu-Tui Hakka traditional sports and culture. |
