醫學訪察的記憶：日治時期杜聰明歐美之旅的敘事策略

The Memories of Medical Pilgrimage: Dr. Tsungming Tu’s Narrative Tactics of Travel Writings about Europe and America during the Japanese Colonial Period

台灣日治時期遠至歐美各國的遊記難得留存，《杜聰明博士世界旅遊記》蘊含知識菁英在離台及歸返之後的衝擊。從作者學養、文化資本及旅遊動機等出發前的面向，到行程設計、參觀地景、與當地人互動的過程，皆呈現旅遊與敘事的密切關聯。回歸之後的旅遊書寫，更因比較文化差異而改變自我的視界。本文以杜聰明的遊記為主要研究素材，並參酌回憶錄、家書、考察報告、報紙等資料，分析旅外的體驗。杜聰明以旅遊回憶的寫作手法，描述日治時期首次至歐美旅遊經歷及感受，所流露的世界觀為旅人回歸後的省思。遊記不僅再現歐美醫學現代性，且隱含醫學與帝國的關聯。藉由醫學教育與人物的面向，詮釋杜聰明遠赴歐美歷時兩年半的旅遊考察與反思，以呈現台灣日治時期旅外遊記的特殊質性。

Travel writings about western countries are rarely seen and preserved during theJapanese colonial period in Taiwan. Dr. Tsungming Tu’s World Travel Notes, one of Taiwan’sfew remaining works, demonstrates how traveling abroad could influence thewriter’s thoughts. In the book, all the details related to the journey—ranging from thewriter’s knowledge, cultural capital, travel motives, to itinerary plannings, scenery visitsand interactions with the indigenous people—indicate that travel is closely associatedwith narratives. Through travel writings, Dr. Tu experienced the differences between thewestern countries and his hometown, while reflecting upon his life stories, and furthergaining a new perspective on life and the world. This paper aims to explore how Dr. Tuviewed the modernity of western societies, and to analyze his narrative tactics so as tounveil the symbolic implications hidden between the lines. Through compiling his travelogues,medical observation experiences, and cultural writings, the paper is expected topresent the general features of exotic travel writings during the Japanese colonial periodin Taiwan.
