The aesthetic trend commonly shown in Red Chamber opera of the Qing dynasty reflects the aesthetics of the Yabu kunqu of the late years of the Qing dynasty. On the one hand, its adaptation trend of ”conveying emotion to create ambience” was mainly focused on the creation of ambience and the concentration of emotion. On the other hand, Red Chamber opera pays more attention to the artistry of the libretto than to its stage performance, so it generates more fun when being read at a desk. Consequently, the organization of the plot, the refinement of the theme and the portrayal of the characters were often put on the back burner by Red Chamber opera of the late years of the Qing dynasty. ”The Legend of the Dream of the Red Chamber”, written by Chen Zhonglin and published during the rule of the Daoguang Emperor, is one of the representative works of the late Qing dynasty's Red Chamber opera. This thesis attempts to observe Chen's work in the context of the adaptation history of the Qing dynasty's Red Chamber opera, point out the three primary characteristics that distinguish it from other Red Chamber operas, and define its significance in the adaptation history of Red Chamber opera through the two aspects of plot design and the search for new material. Serving as a paradigm, not only did Chen's work help blaze the trail of the adaptation of other Red Chamber operas but also provided many directions for them to develop further. |
