In recent years, the English departments in Taiwan have much too often been denounced by both insiders and outsiders alike as malfunctioning. It is over four decades since the .first establishment of English department in Taiwan. And it is the past few years when the call for a sweeping renovation of education has become so shrill that people (especially the students and faculty members of the English departments) have begun to cast unsurprising doubts upon the operation of the English departments. They lavish censures and even demand a rapid curricular revamping. 'Is there really anything at all wrong with our English departments?' has been my first reaction to the above rebukes. Craving for finding answer(s) to this question, therefore, underlies the initiative of this study. |
