The study aimed to investigate technological university students’ English proficiency in NETPAW test and to identify underlying factors that influence their performance in listening and reading comprehension test. There were totally 1,564 EFL college students participating in this research. They voluntarily took the NETPAW Test after one-year general English course incorporated with explicit instruction of test-taking skills. The results of the study showed that 409 students passed the A2 test (the Elementary Level) and 178 students passed the B1 test (the Intermediate Level). The passing rate of “Elementary Level” and “Intermediate Level were 32.2% and 60.8% individually. The course was beneficial to upgrade English language ability, especially for higher-level students. The current study also revealed that the average listening scores were much higher than the average reading scores. It indicated that technological university students needed longer hours of instruction and more practice in reading comprehension to catch up with their listening ability. In order to prepare students for success on the test in the future, the difficulties that the learners came across on the test and suggestions for effective English teaching are also provided. |
