Co-written and directed by Akira Kurosawa, Ikiru is a 1952 Japanese film inspired byLev Tolstoy’s “The Death of Ivan Illyich”. In this film, Kurosawa presents the life of amiddle-aged petty official Kanji Watanabe, who, after learning of his mortal illness, startsto examine his own past and, seeing its meaninglessness, tries to find a way to endow hisremaining life with meaning, with what Martin Heidegger calls “authenticity”. The purposeof this paper is to interpret Ikiru in terms of Heidegger’s concept of authenticity asexplicated in his book Being and Time. |
