In recent decades, the working environment for translators has been fundamentally changed by the advent of computerized word processing and specialized software for translators (CAT).This change must be reflected in the training of translators, because the use of CAT software ensures efficiency of translation as well as consistency and quality of the target text. An expertise in the use of CAT, acquired during training, reinforces translaion skills and improves individual career opportunities (Qian 49; Su 70). This paper aims to demonstrate how machine translation (MT), computeraided translation and post-editing of computer-generated translations (MTPE) could be integrated into translator training. It was motivated by the changing needs of professional translators, who, without the use of computers, would not be able to cope with their daily translation tasks. The presentation of specific problems and the evaluation of CAT software for this essay focuses on the situation of Sino- German translator training in Taiwanese universities. Its main plea, however, is valid for other languages and countries. |
