Enhanced recovery after surgery is associated with improved outcome from reduction of intravenous peri-operative fluid. The goal is to achieve a zero fluid balance in the whole course of uncomplicated surgery. Excess fluid administration causes intestinal edema and postoperative ileus, subsequently prolonging hospital stay. Mechanical bowel preparation is no longer a standard recommendation. Early eating and drinking should be encouraged postoperatively and oliguria should be accepted. |
