Objectives. The aim of this study was to clarify factors related to traditional Chinese doctors’ perception, attitude, and prevention methods for better safety in the care of patients receiving acupuncture therapy. Methods. The target subjects were all Taiwanese doctors practicing traditional Chinese medicine (N=5,099). A cross-sectional analysis was performed using structured questionnaire. In addition to descriptive and variant analyses, multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate the possible factors influencing traditional Chinese doctors’ perception, attitude, and prevention activities related to patient safety. Results. Total 1,424 valid questionnaires were collected (the participation rate was 27.9%). The average age of the enrolled traditional Chinese doctors was 48.7 years old. The ratio of male to female was three to one. 95.8% of the questions related to perception were answered correctly. The mean attitude score was 4.72 (the total score was 5). The mean their precaution score was 4.72 (the total score was 5). The multiple regression analysis revealed that the factors affecting perception were “the way they were certified” and “the mean outpatient number per visit”. The factors influencing attitude included “age”, “seniority”, “professional title”, “personal experience of abnormal medical events”, “number of hours of attending patient safety education program” and “perception of patient safety”. The factors impacting prevention methods included “location of the institute” and “attitude toward patient safety”. Conclusion. Generally, the older the traditional Chinese doctors and the more hours of safety education programs they attended, the more positive the doctor’s attitude toward acupuncture patient safety. Their perceptions positively affected their attitudes toward methods of preventing abnormal events. (J Med Health. 2016;5(1):35-51) |
