The School-based Surveillance System mainly monitors communicable diseases affecting school-age children. Elementary schools are densely populated with children whose immune systems are generally vulnerable. Once a communicable disease is introduced into the school, epidemics can easily occur. To effectively control the occurrence of infections transmitting, the CDC under the Department of Health has launched the pilot School-based Surveillance System in February 2001. The number of elementary schools enrolled in the system has increased from 20 to approximately 450. This system aims to acquire the long term trends of communicable diseases in school-age children, in order to facilitate early detection of pathogens and prevention of epidemics. |
