The Sentinel Surveillance System was launched by the former National Quarantine Service in 1989. It aimed counterbalance under-reporting and procrastination on various notifiable and reportable infectious diseases, and was formally operated in 1990. Sentinel physicians are recruited on a voluntary basis and the figure of sentinel sites is adjusted for population density. Originally, the selection of sentinel physicians involved several steps. First, local health authorities recommended practicing physicians who had numerous patients and thus were representative in the local population. Second, staff from the regional office of the Quarantine Service Center would choose suitable physicians aforementioned after interviewing about their will of cooperation. To date, approximately 600 to 700 sentinel physicians are maintained, covering 70% of townships across Taiwan. |
