In 2006, 26 Malaria cases were confirmed (incidence rate = 0.11 / 105) which was the same as the number of confirmed cases (incidence rate = 0.11 / 105) in 2005. All of these cases were imported. The characteristics of confirmed Malaria cases are as follows: The sex ratio was 12.0 (12.0:1.0), with 24 male cases (92.3%) and 2 female cases (7.7%). Among them, cases ages 25-39 and 40-64 were highest (n = 8, 30.8%, respectively), following ages 5-14 (n = 6, 23.1%), and 15-24 (n = 4, 15.4%). Cases occurred year-round with a wide geographical distribution. The numbers of cases was highest in Taipei Metropolitan (n = 10, 38.5%), Taipei and Taoyuan county (n = 4, 15.4%, respectively), Taichung and Pingtung County (n = 3, 11.5%, respectively) and Taichung City and Changhwa County (n=1, 3.8%). The protozoan type of these cases was 3 Plasmodium malariae, 17 Plasmodium falciparum, 7 Plasmodium vivax, one mixed infection. The countries of origin of imported cases were Asia (n = 11, 42.3% ), Africa (n = 11, 42.3%) and Oceania (n = 4, 15.4%). |
