The Sentinel Surveillance System was launched by the former National Quarantine Service in 1989. It aimed counterbalance under-reporting and untimeliness on various reportable infectious diseases, and was formally introduced in 1990. Sentinel physicians are recruited on a voluntary basis and the number of sentinel sites is adjusted for population coverage. Originally, the selection of sentinel physicians involved several steps. First, local health authorities recommended practicing physicians who had a substantial number of patients and thus were representative of the local population. Second, staff from the regional office of the Quarantine Service Center would choose suitable physicians after interviewing them to understand whether they would be willing to cooperate. To date, approximately 650 to 800 sentinel physicians are maintained, covering 70-80% of townships across Taiwan. |
