Gathering Knowledge and Spreading Chinese Culture

為典藏國家文獻，每年多方徵集舊籍文獻相關資訊、查訪國內外收藏家之舊籍文獻狀況，並辦理舊籍文獻資料之採購審查，就擬購舊籍版本、品相好壞、是否具典藏價值等提供專業意見。2016年除採購臺灣舊地圖16幅、日治時期明信片26張，及中文舊籍圖書128種外，另取得臺灣大學醫學系錢宗良教授經手之臺大醫院醫學人文博物館有關臺灣等地區老明信片計約1,700張，提供本館進行數位典藏，持續充實臺灣相關史料文獻。至年底，計典藏善本舊籍26萬760冊、年畫2,182幅、古文書2,360種（2,375件）、拓片1萬3,634幅、明信片1萬1,951張、百年中文圖書1,185冊、百年西文圖書4,296冊、西文古地圖25幅、中文古地圖573幅、名賢墨寶等雜件604件。其中，依據「文化資產保存法」指定為國寶者計40部303冊（卷）、重要古物者249部2,875冊，另列為珍貴動產者計有古籍449部5,311冊（卷）、書畫23件。

In the acquisition of national documents, the Library continued to gather information on old books and documents, visiting collections in and out of the country to check on the condition of rare books and documents, and conducting evaluations of old books and documents for purchasing. The Library also invited scholars and experts to offer professional opinions on the editions, appearances, and value of rare book collections proposed for procurement by the Library. In 2016 the Library procured 16 old maps of Taiwan, 26 postcards from the Japanese occupation period, and 128 Chinese rare books in addition to the approximately 1,700 digitalized old postcards loaned from the NTU Museum of Medical Humanities, through Professor Chien Tsung-liang of the NTU College of Medicine. By the end of 2016, the Library’s collection numbered 260,760 volumes of rare books, 2,182 New Year paintings, 2,360 rare documents (2,375 items), 13,634 ink rubbings, 11,951 old postcards, 1,185 Chinese books more than one hundred years old, 4,296 Western books more than one hundred years old, 25 ancient Western maps, 573 ancient Chinese maps, and 604 valuable scrolls of calligraphy and paintings by famous writers and painters. Among these, 40 titles (303 volumes) are listed as national treasures, 249 titles ( 2,875 volumes) are listed as important antiquities, and 449 rare editions (5,311 volumes) and 23 paintings are listed as valuable works, according to the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act.
