Eye floaters are small moving spots that appear in the field of vision. Eye floaters are suspended in the vitreous humour. There are various causes for the appearance of floaters, of which the most common is shrinkage of the vitreous humour. Normally, it is a aging process. But sometimes eye floaters are a sign of a more serious condition. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if the floaters are accompanied by flashes of light or a loss of side vision. While surgeries do exist to correct for severe cases of eye floaters, there are no appropriate medications that can correct for this vitreous deterioration. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a long and rich history, and is one of the oldest form of medicine. The earliest description about eye floaters can be traced back to the Sui Dynasty. In this study, we tried to review the cognition of traditional Chinese medicine to the disease cause and pathogenesis of eye floaters from ancient literatures or textbooks. We found that enrich the liver and kidney, clear heat and disinhibit dampness, quicken the blood and move qi are the most common therapeutic principle. The study could be a reference for the implementation of clinical application. |
