This paper investigates the nominal phrases in four Yue dialects, including Hong Kong Cantonese (Guangfu group), Lianjiang dialect (Gaoyang group), Kaijian dialect (Goulou group) and Hezhou local dialect (Goulou dialect). The investigation concerns mainly the following issues: (i) the grammatical form and syntactic distribution of the functional categories in nominal phrases, such as the general classifier, collective marker, plural classifier and modification marker; (ii) the encoding of definiteness; (iii) the occurrence of the modification marker and its grammatical property. Despite the similarities of nominal phrases in the four dialects, some differences are observed, to name but a few, the complicated form of the functional categories in Kaijian and Hezhou, the encoding of definite nominal phrases in Lianjiang and the different grammatical property of the modification marker in Kaijian. |
