The purpose of this study was to explore the evaluation of preceptors for nursing students in nursing administration practice. A cross-sectional research design was used in this study. A structured questionnaire was administered to nursing students with nursing administration practice. The Statistical Program for the Social Science Personal Computer (SPSS-PC) was used to analyze data. The results were as follows: (l) The mean scores for students evaluation of preceptors' personality characteristics were the highest, and those for their professional competence the lowest. (2) The mean scores for evaluation of preceptors' ability to assist students in achieving study goals were the highest, and those for ability to demonstrate nursing skills the lowest. (3) There was a significantly positive correlation between scores for professional competence, teaching competence, interpersonal relationship and personality characteristics of preceptors (p <.01). (4) Evaluation scores were higher for preceptors with higher scores in self-evaluation of interest in clinical teaching, participating in clinical practice conferences, and being younger (p< .05). (5) The scores for self-evaluation of interest in clinical teaching were lower in older preceptors (p <.01). The results suggest that schools and hospitals should to pay attention to training in clinical teaching and conferences on clinical practice for preceptors, to improve the quality of clinical teaching. |
