The purpose of this study is to use the concept of mainline capacity control, setthe control thresholds, and establish the strategies to find the timing for activatingthe control strategies. By reviewing the literatures, we find that the existing controlstrategies rarely discussed about how to determine the optimal timing point toactivate control strategies. Furthermore, the historical control strategies also didnot examine the impact of optimal control timing on system performance. Hence, themain concern of this paper is to establish a method to determine the optimal timingto activate control strategies and improve the performance of control strategies. Inorder to prove our strategy, we use microscopic traffic flow simulation software andits run-time extension to simulate the strategies and analyze the performance. Thisstudy focuses on activating the integrated control strategies and analyzing theperformance. The results show that the control strategies added a strategy foractivating control can reduce more travel time for drivers on the freeway. |
