Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM), an important metabolic illness of childhood & adolescence, not only influences patients’ physical conditions, but also causes many psychological and social problems. The purpose of this study were to (1) develop IDDM camp which was supported by both a non-government association and national hospitals, (2) evaluate the effectiveness of IDDM camp on knowledge, self-monitoring, insulin injection and HbA1C of patients. Results indicated that children with IDDM could participate safely in an IDDM camp with good organization and policy. IDDM knowledge and motivation of self-management by patients were improved after camp, but HbA1C weren’t improved. This first IDDM camp in Taiwan was deeply appreciated by patients and their parents. |
