Various models of visual word recognition have been proposed to explain the underlying processes of orthography-to-phonology transformation. There is still a debate concerning whether regularity or consistency is more appropriate for representing the knowledge of orthography-to-phonology correspondences and characterizing the difficulty of word naming. This article reviews findings of related studies and suggests that neighborhood characteristics, such as the relative frequency of friends and enemies, play a central role across different languages. Studies that aim to integrate behavioral and electrophysiologyical approaches might help to reveal the temporal dynamics of reading processes. |
