The purpose of the study was to discuss the life experience of pregnant women whose premature babies were hospitalized. The clinical field research method was adopted in these cases. Four pregnant women took part in this study. The researcher played the role of an observer-as-participant from the birth to the discharge of the premature infants. The spontaneous verbal and nonverbal language and behavior expressed by the cases were recorded in the form of process recordings within 12 hours of the cases leaving the hospital. The themes of life experience of the mothers were identified and categorized by content analysis, which was used to analyze the words and sentences in the process recordings. Five themes of life experience of the preterm mothers were identified and categorized as: (1) suddenly skipping over the space and time of the pregnancy, (2) facing disappointment and frustration after the preterm labor, (3) falling into uncertainty as to the health of the premature infant, (4) being prevented from showing maternal love, and (5) worrying about self-inadequacy in playing the role of the premature baby. It is hoped that the results of this study will help clinical nurses to become more sensitive to the special care needs of mothers who have preterm babies. |
