The purpose of this study was to develop a wireless intelligent triage PDA support system based on the most up-to-date ideas in the design of a triage system. The system was designed for the Emergency Department of a medical center. An intensive prototyping approach was used for the system development. The system was composed of two key components: PDA and PC workstation. The Palm-based Visor Edge PDA was used due to its support of 802.11b wireless connection. The server-side program was coded in VB 6 with Access 97 database. The system was designed based on the Emergency Triage and Evaluation Form and was incorporated with a table-based triage acuity expert system based on the Triage Acuity Guidelines published by the Executive Yuan, Department of Health in Taiwan. The interface of the PDA system was specially designed to assure its ease of use. The completed system was composed of 29 key forms, organized into six categoriesbasic information, vital signs, traumatic complaints, non-traumatic complaints, nursing evaluation, and operational screens-with 452 information items. The most challenging part in the system development was how to fit the system into the triage workflow as smoothly as possible. This system can support comprehensive triage under a well-structured data system and the triage acuity guidelines. Our next step will be to thoroughly evaluate the practical effectiveness of the system. |
