National Central Library has been promoting ISBN coding and Cataloging in Publication (CIP) since July 1989. This was a new milestone at the time in the standardization and internationalization of publications coding in Taiwan. In February 1990, Taiwan's ISBN Center was officially established. Since then, the Center has been using an automated system to assign ISBNs and CIPs to new publications. It has also imported information regarding publishers and related directory to its ISBNnet website, providing searches of new books and publishing houses, as well as downloadable bibliographies of new publications. This data can be used by those in the publication industry to understand publication trends, or by individuals and libraries to make reading and acquisition choices. This paper will explore publications by publishers, government agencies, social groups and individuals during 2012, based on ISBN and CIP application information submitted to the Center. Specifically, the total number of publications, topic categories, common classification, the language and origin of translated books, and conditions regarding ISBN application for e-books will be analyzed. The results show the current conditions and trends of new publications in Taiwan, and provide a platform for good books information in Taiwan to be used in increasing public reading. |
