This paper is the author's response to an invitation, in conjunction with National Central Library's (NCL) 80th Anniversary Celebration, to write his impressions of NCL's development over the last few decades. Observations and suggestions are given in the following order: 1. The National Palace Museum should bequeath the rare books it has been taking care of on behalf of the now-defunct National Peking Library to NCL; 2. NCL should bring together important libraries throughout the world to co-create a union catalog of Chinese rare books so that scholars can use this catalog to research the extant books. 3. Regarding expectations in the field of library and information science, the author suggests that the Ministry of Education establish a main library administration office, and that NCL's Director-general should also function as the director of this office. In addition, a new library should be built in conjunction with this. 4. NCL should invite the directors of other national libraries to congregate for an international meeting, wherein the experience of each national library is made available for reference in improving library services and operations, as well as new innovations and development. |
