Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is one of the most common psychiatric disorders in childhood and affects up to 5% to 8% of school-aged children . Its major treatments include medications and behavior therapy. The 14- month Multimodal Treatment of ADHD (MTA) study compared the use of medication (predominantly methylphenidate hydrochloride), intense behavior therapy, the two combined, and standard commu-nity care in a group of 579 children with ADHD combined type, who were 7.0 to 9.9 years of age at study entry. The results showed that medication is superior to behavior therapy for reducing core ADHD symptoms, and combined treatment is not more effective than medication alone for these symptoms . |
