The study explored if the severe public punitive attitudes are related the low public satisfaction with safety and how perceived media coverage of homicide news moderates this relationship. Analyzing data derived from the “2014 Survey research on Attitudes toward Death Penalty and Related Values in Taiwan” conducted by the Academia Sinica, this study found that, when considering the moderating effect , both homicide news coverage and public satisfaction with community safety were positively correlated with public attitudes toward puninitiveness. The results also indicated group 1 (perceived low homicide news coverage and low public satisfaction with community safety) shared the similar punitive attitudes with group 4 (perceived high homicide news coverage and high satisfaction with community safety). On the other hand, group 2 (perceived low homicide news coverage and high satisfaction with community safety) shared the similar lenient punishment attitudes with group 3 (perceived high homicide crime news coverage and low satisfaction with community safety). The study concluded that perceived homicide news coverage had a moderating effect on public satisfaction with community safety and their attitudes toward punitiveness. |
