Background: Laparoscopic mini-gastric bypass (LMGB) is an effective treatment for morbid obesity. However, data regarding the gastrointestinal quality of life following LMGB is lacking. The authors analyzed the improvement in the health-related quality of life after weight loss following LMGB. Methods: In total, 95 patients, who underwent LMGB for morbid obesity, were studied prospectively. The patients’ quality of life was measured using the Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index (GIQLI) before and at two years after surgery. Results: After LMGB, the mean BMI of the patients decreased from 41.8 before surgery to 27.8 two years after surgery. The GIQLI score showed an improvement after surgery. The patients had improvements in their social functioning, physical status and psychological emotions; however the patients also showed an increase in GI symptoms. Furthermore, the GIQLI score showed a correlation, after surgery, between loss of excess weight and self-satisfaction. Conclusion: LMGB is effective approach to weight loss and the patients’ gastrointestinal quality of life was improved in parallel with the weight loss. |
