路上行人史──蘇花公路的前世今生

A History of People on the Road: The last lives and the Present of Suhua Highway

蘇澳花蓮之間的開路是一個長達一個世紀以上的長期事件，性質上乃是一條路線的多次重生。從清朝的後山北路、日本統治時期的東海徒步道、臨海道路，到國民政府時期的蘇花公路，就路的開拓與使用來看，這條路不斷生成的過程，特別是就路上行人的種種活動來觀察，則是充滿某種生死矛盾與情緒的變化，而主權、原住民、管理與科技等元素，分別在不同時期進入這個矛盾格局，終於蘇花公路在它最安全的今日，反而漸漸失去它的生命意義。

The road-building between Suao and Hualian has been a kind of long-term event which operated more than one century. From the North Road Behind the Mountains of Ching Dynasty, Walking Path and Coastal Road under Japanese Governing to Suhua Highway of National Government, this road has undergone many times of rebirth. Through the ways of its building and usage, and the activities with different kinds of emotion of the people on this road, this road has been full of contradictions from its beginning. Elements like sovereignty, aborigine, transportation efficiency, dynamite, technology and tunnels have joined into such contradictory situation in turn. Today Suhua Highway seems to be functionally much safer than ever before, but the significance of the road fades away in aporia logic.
