Aim: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between the demographic profile, disease characteristics and fatigue among women in long-term hemodialysis. Methods: The convenience sampling method and structured questionnaires were adopted to investigate fatigue among 130 women receiving hemodialysis at a regional teaching hospital in northern Taiwan. The structured questionnaires included demographic profile, disease characteristics, and Revised-PFS-Chinese Version. Statistical analyses consisted of descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS 17.0 statistical software. Results: The study subjects showed a moderate level of fatigue (M=109.35+38.62, Range=31-185); PFS of these women receiving dialysis differed by age, education, occupation, menstrual status, sleep disorders, the number of arteriovenous operations, with or without chronic disease and serum albumin (p< .05); Predictors of higher PFS were having sleep disorders, older age, and lower educational level (F= 2.59, p< .01). Higher PFS predictors explained 35% of the total variance. Conclusions: The results of this study can help healthcare workers understand the level of fatigue in women receiving dialysis and the important predictors of fatigue. The knowledge can be used as a guide for designing interventions and related research in the future. |
