The commercial cultivation of transgenic plants in India, one of the biggest developing nations, has been thriving over the recent years; however, the lagging legislation in this very field has led to various problems such as the inadequacies of law level and scattering laws. The Indian government, hoping to improve the situation, has then decided to establish a unified law on the subject of genetically modified foods, while putting emphasis upon environmental safety as well as protection of health. The legislation would also focus on the precaution principle, meanwhile implementing the compulsory food labeling system and strengthening surveillance and accountability mechanisms, all of which could lead to a well consolidated legislation that would serve as valuable references for other developing nations. |
