The cerebrovascular diseases is the third leading cause of death in Taiwan. Moreover, the survivors from cerebrovascular disease suffer from long term disability because of the sequel of the disease. According to systematical research reviews, the stroke patients receiving care in the stroke center had a lower mortality rate (0.79) compared to those in the general medical units. Additionally, these patients had fewer complications secondary to stroke. National Taiwan University Hospital opened a stroke center to provide integrated care in 2002. The accomplishment s of the stroke center include patient education regarding awareness and care after stroke, swallowing screening for the patient with swallow difficulty, and reduction of urinary tract infection secondary to retention of the urinary catheter. |
