This study is attempted to investigate the pattern of gaps in Mandarin Chinese on the basis of the pioneering study done by Li (1988). From the perspectives of contrastive analysis, we make use of five criteria, lacking in English Gapping, to discriminate the types of Gapping in the language; they are the lack of negation, verb gapping constraint within VO, subject blocking effect, subordination, and the occurrence of the seeming pseudo-gapping. This survey empirically supports the authenticity and categorization of the Complex Gapping in Mandarin Chinese. |
