Hearing loss seriously degrades the speech perception of a subject by impairing auditory discrimination. Hearing assistance devices can help sufferers to make the best use of their residual hearing ability. The effects of these devices for subjects depend on the auditory training provided by speech and language pathologists. However, such training is a time-consuming and expensive process. In clinical practice, speech and language pathologists teach a caregiver how to assist a subject’s auditory perception. However, the effects of auditory perception for subjects are quite different. Therefore, to develop a homecare auditory training system would be very useful for hearing impaired subjects. In this study, a handheld device based auditory training system has been developed to help hearing impaired subjects and speech and language pathologists. The proposed system contains two subsystems: one for distinguishing sounds and another for identifying a sound. Using the optimal octaves for Mandarin phonemes, the difficulties of paired test items are objectively estimated. An automatic item generation is proposed to provide diverse test items and increase the interest of auditory training. Finally, the training portfolio is recorded and provided to speech and language pathologists for adjusting training activities. To evaluate the proposed system, a mean opinion score was adopted in this study; the score is 4.21. So, the experimental results show that it is a feasible approach for users. In the future, this approach will be evaluated in clinical practice. |
