Using the notion of temporal structuring as a lens, this research tries to understand the difficulties of supply chain systems adoption. A central concept of the temporal structuring is that technology adoption could be viewed as an emergence process. In organizational life, technology use is shaped and constrained by structural conditions. When structural conditions enacted by time change, the outcome of technology use will be reshaped. Thus, a technology is suitable or not suitable for an organization can not be easily distinguished at the beginning of adoption. From this lens, this research applies the qualitative method to report a case of supply chain system in Taiwan information industry, and to understand the situation of the supply chain system by using in a long-term inter-organizational collaboration. This study shows: (1) How does the structural characteristic of supply chain change? (2) If structural characteristic changes, how does it induce the information system fail for supporting the supply chain activities? This study provides the theoretical and practical implications with regard to temporal context of technology adoption and structural transformation of supply chain. |
