This thesis aims to determine the nature and meaning of the relationship between a Taiwanese opera troupe and the media. The study focuses on the “Ming Hwa Yuan” Taiwanese Opera Troupe and makes use of the UDN News Database to trace news events relevant to Ming Hwa Yuan between 1981 and 2010. The research will describe and analyze how instant news, news reports, and news commentary represent different representations and meanings of “Min Hwa Yuan” in news field. In terms of narrative perspective, Ming Hwa Yuan is itself a participator in different cultural and political events; the result is that Ming Hwa Yuan’s role in the news has become newsworthy in itself. Meanwhile, the history of Ming Hwa Yuan has been a focus of the news. As a symbol of local arts, and appearing in a variety of cultural and social activities, Ming Hwa Yuan has experienced periods of “change”, “refinement”, “innovation”, “glory”, 'social participation', 'culture creative industry' – all as the plot of Taiwanese opera. |
