The aim of this study was to investigate the exercise habits of middle-aged white-collar males, and reveal relevant factors that may influence these habits. 349 subjects were selected using convenient sampling from a list of an employees' physical checkup in a company in Taipei. All participants were males aged from 40 to 65, and their socioeconomic status was above middle class. A self-report questionnaire was used for data collection; and SAS and BMDP computer software were adopted for data analysis. This research reveals three fmdings. First, only 26.4% ofthe subjects had the habit of regular exercise. Second, among the 257 irregular exercisers, 45% of them exercised for less than once a week and 34% would exercise for less than 20 minutes each time. In addition, over half of the irregular exercisers engaged in mild exercise only. Third, the results of logistic regression analysis showed that subjects who had higher self-efficacy, found exercise enjoyable, attended health groups and classes, and exercised without needing to invite partners tended to have regular exercise habits. Self-efficacy was the most significant factor affecting the habit of regular exercise. Based on the above findings, strategies to promote employees' exercise habits and directions for further research are also suggested. |
