The purpose of this study is to explore nursing care of near-death patients in surgical intensive care units. A total of 120 surgical intensive care unit nurses were recruited from a medical center located in southern Taiwan. A structural questionnaire was used to gather data from these nurses. Statistical analysis by means of descriptive analysis, t-test, one way ANOVA and Pearson’s correlation was performed based on the data obtained. The results have shown that in the nursing care of the near-death patients, most efforts were aimed at providing maximal physical comfort to the patient. Few efforts concentrated on the attentive needs of the family. The psychological and spiritual needs of the patient were among the mostly easily overlooked aspect of the care of near-death patient. Nursing care for the near-death patients were shown to be correlated with nursing manpower, job recognition, self confidence, sharing experience with peers, and full support from the head nurse. We hope the results of this study can be utilized in the future by practitioners, educators, and administrators for the study of near-death patient care. |
