This is a brief review about the progress of women’s studies program/center in Taiwan and how it relates to the development of gender equity education. Based on the stages theory to scrutinize the development of women’s studies programs from the early neglected stage, and to the stage that is aware the gender difference but with male dominant concept, to the searching for missing women stage, to the conflicts among the subordinate status stage, to women’s centered studies, to women studies as a challenge to discipline stage, to the gender harmony stage. Equity, justice and development is the optimal goal of women’s studies. Therefore, gender equity education is the primary efforts applied by those activist, feminist and women studies scholars. The challenges faced to the promotion of Gender Equity Education will be the pedagogies, the development of teaching materials, the consciousness raising for those teachers, the feminist epistemology, the diversity/multicultural concept, feminism/female experiences, gender equity on sex education, confusion about the translation terms, women study/gender study/men study, marginal/central, localization/globalization, grassroots/partnership/elite dominance, with gender sensitivity mind administrators, etc. Personal is political. We need to continue the efforts and crate more supervision and monitor groups toward the development of Gender Equity Education. |
