現代化生活，交通發達，人際來往頻繁，交通事故扶遙直上，工業生產中工傷事故也在所難免，群眾性體育運動大力開展，以及人口老化，加上自然災害，骨傷病人就日漸增多。但骨折不是什麼疑難大症，各種療法都可取得一定效果，骨折後由於自身的生物系統所形成的反饋機制，病人及家屬在原位加以包紮或付木固定，未累及關節的骨折都可癒合。當然畸形嚴重者也會影響肢體外形及功能。現代骨科奠基人之 -- Robert Jones 早在 1921年就說過：＂ 功能是矯形外科醫師的目標，他的專業就是了解並擇用最好方法去獲得功能，手法或手術是治療的開端，最卓越的功績只能在功能上成功來衡量 ＂。所以治療時應選擇方法簡單，療效確實，少受痛苦，不擔風險，恢復患者的生產勞動能力。使 Clary Ray Murray (1) 提出的理想骨折療法：＂ 用仁慈無損傷的辦法讓骨折復位，把骨折固定而不要影響肢體活動，讓患者在骨折癒合期間生活的像正常人一樣 ＂ 得以實現。
