According to Chinese folk practice, Canavalia microcarpa (CM) was used to treat hemorrhoid effectively. In this study, we investigated and evaluated the pharmacological effects of CM extract by means of modern pharmacological techniques. It was found that CM extract diminished the pain reactions induced by chemical and hot plate methods. CM extract obviously caused constriction of blood vessels in the rabbit ear in vitro. In anesthetized rats, CM extract elevated the arterial blood pressure. Furthermore, it shortened the coagulation time of rat's venous blood as estimated by Lee-White methods. Additionally, CM was also effective in antagonizing inflammation induced by local irritation at rats hind paws.On account of these results, we conclude that Canavalia microcarpa has the potential for the treatment of hemorrhoid through its analgesic, anti-inflammatory and hemostatic effects. The bioactive constituents of Canavalia microcarpa may be present in the H2O layer. |
