Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. is a herb used as tonic and anti-aging agent in Chinese medicine. The crude extract of P. multiflorum showed vasorelaxation activity on rat aortic ring. Isolation and characterization of the chemical constituents of P. multiflorum resulted in the identification of five anthraquinones. They are physcion, emodin, 1-O-methylemodin, physcion 1-O-β-D-glucoside and citreorosein. Among them, 1-O-methylemodin and citreorosein have been isolated from P. multiflorum for the first time. Emodin and 1-O-methylemodin demonstrated strong vasorelaxation activity; physcion was less active; physcion 1-O-β-D-glucoside and citreorosein were inactive. |
