The case report described an ICU nursing of an asthma patient who suffered from acute epiglottitis in the ICU. From August 29 to September 2, 2008, the author applied Gordon’s Functional Health Patterns to conduct an integrated assessment of the patient’s physical, mental and social aspects. The patient was intubated and mechanically ventilated to increase oxygenation. The author established a breathing training plan in cooperation with the patient, allowing the patient to be able to wean from the ventilator successfully. The patient had insufficient knowledge about her disease. The author provided disease-related information to her and expressed concerns to establish a good nursing-patient’s relationship. The author encouraged the patient and her family to express their feelings and their demands, reduced her powerlessness and confront the disease treatment with a positive attitude. The author instructed the patient and her family to acquire information about the disease and self-care management of her disease in her daily life. We hope this nursing experience can serve as a reference for future nurses. |
