The purpose of this study was to understand the nature of the changes in beliefs about medication-taking among persons who are undergoing compliance therapy. In this qualitative study, eight clients with schizophrenia were recruited to form a compliance therapy group. The group underwent eight sessions. Each session ran for 60 minutes and the sessions took place over eight weeks. Each session was recorded using audio-taping. The tape recordings were analyzed by the content analysis method. Four themes emerged from the recordings and these were: (1) seeing no reason to attend the group; (2) repressing and then reawakening experiences of medication-taking; (3) raising doubts, then shifting attention to the reasons why there is a need to take medication and then admitting this, and (4) making a breakthrough and then redefining the relationship between the meaning of medication-taking and self. These results may offer health workers a deeper understanding of the nature of the changes that occur in beliefs about medication when clients undergo compliance therapy. |
