The purpose of this study is to investigate suicidal behavior among juvenile probationers, and to identify the factors influencing suicidal behavior based on an ecological view. Using a convenient sample, a total of 91 juvenile probationers were recruited from a city district court in southern Taiwan. Results reveal that 46.2% of subjects agreed suicide could solve life problem, 34.1% had suicidal thoughts and 23.1% had attempted suicide in the past year. The percentage of subjects that were screened as being at high risk of suicide was 59.3%. Logistic regression was used to identify the best set of discriminates for screening those at high risk of suicide. The significant sets of discriminates were: perceived stress (OR=4.21), unmet school goals (OR=2.50) and family function (OR=.54). Compared with other studies, these results demonstrated that juvenile probationers were at high risk of suicide. From the prevention point of view, it is crucial to develop a suicide prevention network for juvenile probationers that includes all school and court personnel, and parents. |
