The purpose of the project was to establish guidelines for nursing instruction and to improve satisfaction with nursing instruction among outpatients receiving fraction dilatation and curettage surgery at a medical center in Southern Taiwan. A structured questionnaire was used to measure the need for nursing instruction and the patient’s satisfaction with nursing instruction. The results showed the average need for nursing instruction score was 3.27 (SD=.38), and the satisfaction with nursing instruction score was 2.97 (SD=.15). This places the need for nursing instruction between “need” and “strong need”, and the satisfaction with nursing instruction between “unsatisfactory” and “acceptable”. The proportion of persons who were satisfied was 59.4%. A literature survey and clinical experience were used to develop a complete nursing intervention protocol. For instance, this protocol suggests that a professional nurse in a permanent position be used to counsel outpatients and to contact patients by phone before and after the operation. Furthermore, there was a need to design a nursing instruction sheet for fraction dilatation and curettage patients. After applying the nursing instruction sheet and the various rules that the nurses needed to follow, the proportion of patients satisfi ed with the nursing instruction increased from 59.4% to 90.2%. Based on this, the protocol not only improved the satisfaction of patients with the nursing instruction, but also ensured that the patients received a continuous complete regime of nursing care.
