This study describes the nursing experience using grief counseling skills when treating a patient who had lost a son and undergoes major depression as a result... The author understands that the loss of a child results in confl icts that affect both body and mind in a personal way. In this case, the patient was experiencing four nursing problems, namely a risk of suicide, dysfunctional grieving, compromised family coping and a disturbed sleep pattern. In order to help the patient recognize their own behavior and its effect on their family, the author encourage the patient to talk about his sorrowfulness, his feelings of guilty and to travel to the coast to think of his son’s death, as well as exercising humor to show the pleasure of life. As the patient began to use the correct approach to coping with his grief, he found support for life and his wife was able to provide him with further help that decreased confl ict within his family. Eventually, this approach also promoted the patient’s sleep quality and decreased his thoughts of suicide. |
