This case study explored the home care nurse’s role in helping a stroke patient, who had complications whilst using a nasogastric tube, to decide whether to have percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). From May 29, 2003 to March 1, 2004, the home care nurse assessed the patient using Gordon's 11 functional health patterns during five home visits, 30 telephone interviews and 20 hospital bedside visits. Three health related problems were identified through direct nursing care, observation and interviews. These were: impaired physical mobility, potential for injury and changed body image. By listening, and showing empathy and positive support during the nursing process, the home care nurse provided consultation and information. This helped the patient and his family finally break the traditional concepts of body integrity and decide to agree to have PEG surgery, with positive results. |
