This report describes the nursing care for a patient who had a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). The nursing period was from November 11th 2003 to December 2nd 2003. The eleven item Gordon Functional Health Measure was employed as the assessment tool. By means of observation, interviews and physical assessment, the patient was confirmed as having a number of nursing problems including pain, health seeking behavior and anxiety. A holistic management approach using appropriate nursing knowledge and an interdisciplinary approach was then initiated. The initial goals were to help the patient and his family to understand the disease process and establish the best approach to self-care. The optimal goals were to provide symptomatic relief and maintenance of comfort. The patient recovered from the acute disease process and was discharged. It is hoped that by sharing this case report, including the nursing experience, others will be better equipped with adequate professional knowledge when caring for patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors. |
