This study is an attempt to explore the process that shaped the author's personal counseling theories and approach. Utilizing self-narrative as data-collection, the author found that personal experiences, professional training, and clinical practice are the major factors that shape her counseling style. Also, theories provide convincing interpretations for personal experiences. The author's counseling approach includes an integration of existential/humanistic, feminist/social contextual/ familial, and cognitive-behavioral components. Having grown up in an extended family, the author reflects on patriarchal society, power issues, gender impact, cultural values, and social power. She reflects on her parents' untypical gender roles as well as her professional training, all of which contributed to her identity as a counselor. |
