In the era of information, the progress of knowledge and technology in nursing specialty and practice is proceeding at a tremendous pace. Information technology is commonly used as a strategy to develop and construct nursing information system to enhance nursing quality and efficiency. Many healthcare facilities use information technology to assist nursing practice, and there are only few studies regarding informatics literacy competency, so it is necessary to explore what kinds of information literacy that nursing students should possess. Therefore, based on the literature review, this paper classifies the required informatics literacy competencies for nursing students into four categories: concept of computer software/hardware/network, information safety knowledge, competency on using computer software/hardware/network, and ability of using information technology. The paper suggests that students’ characteristics and requirements should be considered to propose training programs of informatics knowledge and skills in curriculum design process. It is also important to cultivate positive informatics attitude for students toward the ethics, law, privacy, and confidentiality issues. It is hoped that this paper could serve as a reference for nursing schools to promote information literacy of students by designing and developing the informatics courses. |
